After spending yesterday afternoon watching the last three episodes in the current series of Community, it was comforting to know that the show was definitely coming back for a fourth series. As it turns out, that fourth series is going to be lacking a key ingredient… the show’s creator.
TV Guide posted an article saying that creator and showrunner Dan Harmon is to be replaced by two men whose writing credits include Just Shoot Me (a terrible show starring David Spade). Harmon quickly responded with his side of the story and while he tries to keep it light-hearted, it doesn’t make for happy reading.
What does this mean for the show? Well it’s not uncommon for creators and showrunners to leave shows, Seinfeld, The Walking Dead, and Dexter have all gone through it and it didn’t hurt the quality. The worrying thing about Harmon leaving Community is that he clearly has such a specific idea about the show’s direction, it would be like having Spaced without Edgar Wright or any Joss Whedon show… without Joss Whedon (imagine the backlash). Quotes claiming that Sony had been “looking at ways to broaden Community and attempt to extend the show’s life on NBC,” don’t help either.
All we can do now is keep our fingers crossed that the remaining cast and writers have enough influence to make sure this great show doesn’t go to shit. Otherwise this could be the darkest timeline after all.
