We know things have been a bit quiet recently, but we swear down that’s going to change. So what better way to start anew than to introduce a new class to The Square Eyed Banner of Fame.
For those of you that don’t know, The Banner of Fame is designed to shine a spotlight on our favourite TV personalities, whether they be real-life or works of pure fiction.
Who? - One quarter of the possibly our favourite X Factor act of all time, Little Mix.
Why her and not one of the others? - Put into a girl band on a TV show and then berated by the media/internet folk for her appearance, Jesy reminds us a lot of a young Nicola Roberts. Which means that if Jesy were to continue down this path, Little Mix will become massive, she’ll have a feud with Chris Moyles, develop quite a few anxiety issues, overcome them and then release a criminally underrated solo album.
Make fun of her all you want but ask yourself this: would you recognise the other three on the street?
Who? - One of the This Is England… lot.
And what’s he doin’ here? - A good mate of mine put it best when describing Joe Gilgun’s performance on This Is England ’88, “you feel everything Woody feels”. That may sounds like acting 101 but performances like that are actually few and far between. When Woody’s funny, we laugh. And when Woody’s hearts been ripped in two? Well lets just use the term “floodgates”, and leave it at that yeah?
He on much else? - As a matter of fact Joe Gilgun has actually been on TV since he was 10, starring as Jamie Armstrong in Corrie. He then went on to that other ITV soap (Emmerdale) as Eli Dingle. More recently though was his more light-hearted turn as crude, crass Rudy in Misfits.
Who? – Class swot in NBC’s Community.
Why her and not Chevy Chase? He’s the main character according to Viva. - I know we may go on a bit about Community, but we just love it that much. We could have put any one of the study group up here but we chose Annie because we know she’d be really proud of this honour.
Where have I seen this dame? - Alison Brie starred in last year’s Scream 4 and is also Pete Campbell’s wife Trudy, in a little known show called Mad Men.
Who? - Bearded badass in The Fades.
What’s The Fades? I’ve never heard of it. - The Fades was a show that aired on BBC3 last year, that focused on a teenage boy who discovered that he could see dead people. I know it all sounds a bit Sixth Sense but the team behind ‘Fades managed to create a rich and unique mythology to help distance itself from the other supernatural dramas out there. Quite frankly I was not prepared for just how good this show was going to be and one of the stand-out performances comes from Johnny Harris aka Neil.
Neil is essentially an holy-soldier, who fights against the dead (“fades”). He acts a mentor to main character Paul, but he’s no Obi-wan Kenobi. In fact he spends a lot of the time forcing people to do horrible things in aim of “the greater good”. He’s a truly compelling character, and probably one of the most despicable “good guys” I’ve ever seen on TV.
He looks mighty familiar… - That’s because Johnny Harris has been in several films such as Atonement, London To Brighton and the upcoming Snow White and The Huntsman. However he’s probably most famous for his role as Lol’s repulsive Dad in This Is England ’86.
Who? - Current receptionist at Dunder Mifflin Sabre in The Office.
Ergh if she’s from the American version then she doesn’t count. - Wrong. While it could be argued that the The American Office has just been running on empty since Steve Carell’s departure, Erin has proven to be a frequent highlight. She’s your typical, chirpy, girl-next-door with hints of quite a sinister past and actress Ellie Kemper’s ability to say some of the most bizarre things in such a casual, up-beat way is nothing short of hilarious.
She was in that Bridesmaids film. - Yes. Yes she was.

Who? - Wrestling’s man of the moment.
A wrestler? Really? - Yes really. Wrestling has more interesting characters and entertaining story lines than basically anything on ITV2. And right now, sitting on top of this wonderfully unique industry is C.M. Punk (don’t ask what the C.M. stands for).
What makes him great is that he completely breaks type. He lives a strict straight-edge lifestyle (no drugs, no alcohol), he’s not a 7ft tall, ‘roided up beefcake, and he’s rather eloquent on a microphone (something wrestlers aren’t exactly known for). All these things, added to the high quality of his in-ring work have made him a must-see guy. The fact that he’s the current WWE Champion and that he’s threatened to choke out Chris Brown, further cements his status as a badass.
